It's really amazinghow different the trees are in Australia. This is a good picture of classic gum tree. They can get very tall.

Taronga Zoo - Wallaby
Taronga Zoo
We all went to Taronga Zoo yesterday. And yes, I can hear you all saying "Whaaaat"? Shirley going to a zoo???? But, I was encouraged that their primary mandate is conservation especially for endangered species like the Tasmanian Devil - (pics of them later) and they have numerous eco approvals. So, here goes and maybe, just maybe there are some zoos that are okay. I'm still a faithful Zoocheck supporter no matter what.

Bird Of The Day
These are two Tawny Frogmouths. I knew they were here in the RBG, but could not find them. I remembered that as a gardener for Toronto that as I went into Riverdale Park East every morning I saw a Eastern Screech Owl everyday in the spring. So today I asked a gardener there, What Birds are you seeing? I got what I was looking for! He told me to follow this path to the stairs, then back up and look into the tree on my right. and there they where, well hidden

Road Sign
Even More Crazy
Road Trip #5 - The Great North Road
This are photos of the remains of the Great North Road. Built by convicts in the early 1800's each rock was hand excavated from the quarry and then hand finished and laid. You can't see from the photos but it is also on the side of what is basically a mountain. We couldn't believe the amount of work that must have been involved and how difficult it must have have been.
Road Trip #5 - The Hawkesbury Valley
Another adventure - a road trip to the Hawkesbury Valley. This valley was settled almost immediately after the First Fleet (convict ships) landed in 1788. This is a picture of the first Presbyterian Church in Australia and the tree is where they worshipped before the church was built. The church is on land overlooking the river and is quite a picturesque place.
Eclectus Parrot
So this guy was just sitting there having a coffee with his parrot named Pat. The only thing I wonder about is that this bird will almost certainly outlive him. The bird is a male Eclectus Parrot. They are somewhat famous parrots because the female is actually more brilliantly coloured than the male, if you can imagine.
